How to Get Rid of Roaches Naturally

Roaches need food, water, and a hiding spot. Take away any one of the three and the population shrinks. This guide skips the heavy chemicals.

The natural plan

  • Seal dry food in containers. Refrigerate pet food at night.
  • Fix dripping taps and condensation under sinks.
  • Place small boric-acid or diatomaceous-earth dots in cabinets (out of reach of kids and pets).
  • Vacuum behind the fridge and stove every two weeks.
  • Seal gaps around plumbing, vents, and baseboards.

Where roaches hide — treat these spots first

Roaches spend the day squeezed into warm, damp cracks close to food and water. Placing bait and sealing gaps at these spots does far more than spraying open floors.

  • Behind and under the fridge, stove, and dishwasher, where warmth and crumbs collect.
  • Inside the motor compartments of kitchen appliances — a favorite German cockroach nursery.
  • Under the sink and around pipe penetrations, wherever there's steady moisture.
  • In the gaps at the backs of cabinets and drawers, and behind loose baseboards.
  • Around the trash bin and in the recycling — rinse cans and bottles before they go in.
